Looking more like a modern cathedral than a railway station, this scaffold at Delhi Road, built up from a 30° sloping floor and providing access to all sides of the escalators, was completed in five days. "The key to this job was the ability to use diagonal braces to create cantilevered platforms. This resulted in a considerable saving in the equipment required - which was critical as all material had to manhandled up several flights of stairs," Brian Whelan said.
Interestingly another identical set of escalators were scaffolded at the same time by another firm - but this time in Kwikstage. It is estimated that the weight of this scaffold was in the order of five times that of Active's . . . and two weeks on, the erection still had some way to go.
