When Hawkins Infrastructure and the Waitakere City Council required a pedestrian bridge over the tracks at Sturges Road rail station in Auckland during the road-bridge replacement project, Camelspace were appointed for the works.
On-Track's consulting engineers, concerned about the risks associated with such a critical structure positioned above their track and rolling stock, asked for a physical load test to be performed in addition to Layher's component load tables and Camelspace's own engineering calculations.
A 1:1 scale replica of the bridge was built and 1.5 x the SWL loaded onto it, a total of 24 tonnes. Needless to say the bridge held with only 45mm of deflection measured at the centre of an 18m unsupported span.
